To Shoot or Not to Shoot

When i first moved to Mississippi, the only crappie fishing techniques i knew were drifting and slip bobber fishing from my days in the mid-west fishing Iowa. But my first time out in the great lakes and reservoirs i quickly learned there were alot of techniques. Single pole, spider rigs, long lining, power drifting. But the technique i quickly found the funnest was dock shooting . And just like it sounds, it is a way of getting farther under docks then just casting up to them. your rod will be anything from 5 1/2' to 8', med to light action with a light tip. 2-6# monofilament and a 1/32 to 1/8 ounce jig of your choice. The hardest part of the fishing is getting the release from your fingers down. Best way i learned was practicing in the yard. Start by grabbing the handle/reel area like your standard fishing form for your hand of choice, pinch your thumb and pointer finger around the jig head , and try instinctively aim at a target. the sighting will take the longest to master. practiicing the the yard helps but on the water it will let you skip jigs on docks where you wont be able to sight cast at. after that its more of catching fish under docks or even in thick groves of trees. Tight lines every one.
