In the fast paced world of fishing, gear is the the biggest problem new fisherman tey to contend with. What rod, fishing line, bait or other hardware do i need. Back in the day with or without a boat, we just used a simple 5-6 ft robber, slip bobber, hook and minnow. But as fishing for crappies progressed, new equipment transformed. Your first fishing rod should be simple and low in price in case you find out its not what you thought it might be. 6-6 1/2' rod whether open ball or or simple reel. Fishing line should be 4-6# test. Terminal tackle for presentation would be a single hook (#2 or #4) with lead split shot weight and bobber or a small #2 jig head and rubber body. Simple is easy. Learning to cast will take the most, but you can practice in the yard. as you progress with experience, you can upgrade in equipment to what ever you want or whatever your wallet lets you. A small tackle box or tackle tray organizer can be had for a few dollars for all your tackle to carry in. A back pack works for a tackle box as it carries more while fishing like fish stringer, rag, water , snacks and fishing license. bait bucket can be a 2 gallon bucket or minnow bucket for bait. Keeping it simple when starting is the key. Tight lines.
